the Tacoteurs

IanIsSeriousIan O’Keefe

39 years old and happily married (sorry ladies), Ian likes long walks on the beach, sitting by the campfire, breakfast tacos, horror flicks, music (could you be more specific), and using parentheses. When not consuming or discussing tacos, Ian runs a t-shirt printing business called Whetstone Graphics, and can often be found next door at the Executive Surf Club having a pint of Harp – also known as ‘the Irish Flu’. As you can tell, Ian is very, very serious.

An expert in institutional employment, Kevin worked for his uncle Sam in the Army before spending a large section of his life engaged in academic pursuit, or at least pursuit of not having to get a real job.  His PhD is forthcoming, at which point he plans to change his first name to Doctor before promptly retiring.  We were unable to locate a photo large enough to contain his entire mustache. Kevin is even more likely to be found at the Executive Surf Club than Ian, usually at about 4:10 PM, with a Paulaner Hefeweizen.

    Ian,
I am coming to Corpus for a conference this weekend. I love tacos, but frankly I don’t have time to wade through a sea of reviews tonight. Could you tell me the name of a couple of good places walking distance from the Omni?

  • Robert F. says:

Kevin, this picture does not do your “stache” justice. And where is the better half in this mug shot?

  • Hey; Non-existent Ohio Tex-Mex? I can say from a visit a few years back to the area near Miami U campus, La Bamba had a “Burrito a big as yur head”. Yep, big! Bean-city filler that bulged the towel-sized infant of a Texas Queso-covered plate version,so much that you had to cradle with both hands and forearms to eat.
Granted, I had my fill of “Indiana Nachos” (Canned jalapen~os,Cheese Door-eaters, and canned cheese whiz with insufficient propellant).
But that was way-back in the blizzard of ’76; before they served pickled jalapen~os at the Fried Chicken Dispensaries up North, and WAY before the National Mexican Food Craze of the 90’s. So HOW do you pronounce “Chipotles”?
We got Big, Tasty Tacos here in Victoria (90Mi-N-of-Corpus)too; with a 5-egg/chorizo bigger-than-the-plate(sized for two!!)for $2.75, I frequent M&M Pinto Bean on Rio Grande. Good Caldo and Menudo too; always with homemade flour tortillas, complimentary hot Queso, and Salsa Rojo (or Verde) and fresh (non-greasy)chips.

    Ian,
Thanks for the tips. It was cold, really damned cold when I was in Corpus. I only made it as far as La Bajia (twice). The migas were delicious. They had fresh tortillas and terrific beans. Thanks again.

Hey, there’s Acapulco on Weber–got tortillas as fine as frog hair–soft and infinitely biteable. Also, they let me get breakie even though it was “past time”! Ala Mexicana–yeah, need a bit more serrano to their hot, otherwise not too shabby! Told ’em to keep a weather eye out for the likes of youse bad boys!

Just reading the Friday Tacotopia review makes me hungry! As always, I enjoy the reviews. Love the T-shirt with the Tacotopia design.

  • Josh T. says:

Have you guys reviewed Frank and Jaime’s Cafeteria yet? It’s on Leopard on the northside of town. I grew up eating tacos there and it has been around for at least 20 years. It has the best tacos and tortillas that I have ever had. And I grew up here in CC.

I love your blog. Keep up the good work! If you ever need another taco taste tester let me know. I’m down!

Oh, and where can I get a T-Shirt?

  • heather says:

have you been to Taqueria Chapala on Nile? my fiancee and I live right over there and would like to give it a whirl… if it’s worth it.

    cheers,

This is my most favorite corpus christi blog! I think we were friends on foursquare before I became paranoid about strangers and deleted you. Forgive me.

    I love using parentheses too!

From yer post of 5 Nov ’10:

    “Governor Steve ‘Ironquaff’ Perry’s . . .”

I wondred why that guy left Journey, but I never woulda guessed he went into politics. Oh well, if Sonny Bono did, I shouldn’t be too surprised.

    “Lovin’ . . . Touchin’ . . . Secedin’ . . .”

Hey Kevin What up ? Just wanted to let you know I caught the last of your episode on the HAIRY BIKERS. I woke Rhonda up Yelling at her “there’s Kevin on T.V. She came flying up thinking the house was on fire. Anyway I’ve been watching to see all of it. Hope you get this. Give Shell a big hug for me. Rick

Delayed Response due to Taco Coma………..Funny Stuff! Super cool to see your post and hear that you saw the show! Hope all is well. Taco On!! 🙂

  • Sean says:

I was wondering if you would be so kind as to review Yoli’s Tacos located on Kostoryz Rd. Some of the staff at this tacqueria transitioned over from the historic Elva’s establishment. I think the food and service are excellent. Good or Bad, I love your reviews.

    • Taco Show Host says:

Sorry for the 10 month delay in responding. We’ll put it on the list. I thought we’d already reviewed it, but I checked and it looks like we haven’t.
